7 Things to Look for in a Great Book for a Child—Part 5

It conveys imaginative and memorable ideas.

These are the books that take us to places outside of our own worlds. They may take us to lands faraway, to imaginary worlds, to personally unexplored territories like deep oceans, space, the microscopic world, into the past, or into the world of emotions like joy, intrigue, suspense, compassion, or even grief. These books rouse and shape the soul and are the books we remember long after we’ve read them. Anyone who spends any time with children knows their imaginations are a big part of their young lives—these books speak to that wonderful quality of children to learn through imagining. Vivid descriptions, colorful characters and innovative ideas are some of the things to look for in great books. Just a few examples:

Phantom Tollbooth

Little House on the Prairie Series

Chronicles of Narnia

I love your “what to look for in a great book” series! And I love that you are trying to encourage reading with children. It is so important. I just did a post about this on my blog that related to the Read-Aloud Handbook. Reading is so important and I don’t think most parents realize just how important it is. You don’t need all that fancy stuff for children–a book will do.

Rachel, thanks for your kind comments! You’re right about reading and I too love the Read-Aloud Handbook. Reading aloud to children has SO many benefits!

I can still remember hearing The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe for the for first time.  My second grade teacher read it aloud to the class.  We were all transfixed by the story.  Definitely a imaginative and memorable book!

Thanks for your comment, HappyBirthdayAuthor! The Narnia books are certainly some of the best! I’m not sure if teachers are allowed to read them in school these days (?) but I’m glad to hear you had a teacher who did.
