Do YOU do it too?!
I read this article last night and couldn’t believe it. It was written by a woman I respect and admire and who I know is an amazing reader and fellow bibliophile. http://www.sonlight.com/blog/2012/04/why-i-read-the-end-first.html Here’s what she says: “I usually read the end of a book first. It helps me enjoy the book more.” Aaack! Really?! She [...]
How we did “school” one day last week
Oh Yes—I love job-training!!! They loved it too—I believe kids naturally enjoy work unless they are taught to dread it. This wasn’t all we did for school that day. We also read. Getting to be the end of the year. Enough said.
Chicken-hatching update
Yes! Success! We feel like such good surrogate mama hens. Five out of our 6 eggs hatched and the chicks are thriving! Two had to be helped out of their shells. When it looked after about 24 hours that they weren’t making any progress, I decided to take a chance and give them a [...]
Let Your Fish Swim
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ― Albert Einstein I have a couple fish. In fact, I am a fish too! We aren’t good at absolutely everything those around us are good [...]

Family Reading Journal
I’m getting real here… For all my talk of great books and the value of reading, our schedule this fall has managed to squeeze reading into a tiny little fit-it-in-when-we-can box!! I feel terrible about this and am shifting my focus and priorities to getting back to the place where reading and books are a [...]
Primary Arts of Language (PAL from IEW)–5 First Impressions
I am 6 lessons into the PAL program with my 6 year old. I was so excited to find a primary level product from IEW, since I have used their TWSS and Student Writing Intensive with my older child and have been very impressed. The program is divided into two components, Reading and Writing. I [...]
So True…
A little inspiration and food for thought as the new school year begins. Misty at Encouraging Hearts at Home has nailed it! She has this to say about “The Bad News About Homeschooling”: You will not wake up on the Monday after you make the decision to homeschool and find you’ve turned into Socrates, Anne [...]
2011/2012 Curriculum for 1st and 4th Grades
The gypsy-ness continues, but I am very excited about this year and do believe I am honing in on some parts that will “stick”. We’ll see. So, here’s what we’ve planned for 2011/2012:
Making a Difference
Our local newspaper ran an article this morning about our local schools. A couple of quotes: “In reading, more than 80,000 students are substandard, and the percent not catching up increased this year.” “…the new business of education will be centered around the students who are in the catchup category” After teaching my [...]
